America’s Great Outdoors now a federal priority

The Obama administration’s latest cause: People should get outdoors more. The April 16 Presidential memorandum “America’s Great Outdoors” notes that

“Families are spending less time together enjoying their natural surroundings . . . and we are losing our connection to the parks, wild places, and open spaces we grew up with and cherish. Children, especially, are spending less time outside running and playing, fishing and hunting, and connecting to the outdoors just down the street or outside of town.”

Chapter 3 of Losing Our Cool makes that same point.

President Obama proposes to improve and promote parks and other outdoor areas in order to attract people out of the indoor world. I wish him luck, but he has some stiff competition. A huge share of the economy is focused on making the indoor world more attractive. It won’t be easy to tip the balance back.
